Fresh from the news that the best-selling item inthe Amazon US home electronics category over Christmas was the turntable, it looks increasingly likely that the vinylboom is set to continue into 2016and beyond. Unsurprisingly, the popularity in the analogue format means a greater number of decks hitting the market, which is great for both new and old vinyl fans alike. One new arrival is the Zero turntable from British newcomer Analogue Works. We have already sampled the company’s Turntable One, which was highly Recommended when reviewed in issue 388.

One of the things we love about hi-fi is that it’s continuously evolving. As our systems grow with a mix of carefully chosen components based on our format needs and total synergy with the rest of the setup, it feels like audio art in the making – and it doesn’t stop once all the components are in place either. Years of tinkering has taught me that significant improvements in the sound of my system can often be gained by simply rearranging the furniture in my room or by trying out one of the vast numbers of accessories designed to help prevent interference from external forces or maintain audio signal integrity throughout the chain of components. Not all of them have had a positive effect on the sound of my setup, but many have achieved a nuanced influence, bringing greater rewards to the listening experience.

Welcome to the April 2017 issue of Hi-Fi Choice magazine. Spotify is the world’s most popular music streaming service and has recently surpassed 50 million subscribers, according to its own stats. The streaming service giant’s popularity is also confirmed by the results of our own Twitter poll that ran online in early March asking: “What’s the best music streaming service for you?” – see full survey results on p69. Somewhat surprisingly, the results show that even among quality audio fans Spotify’s ad-free Premium subscription service with sound quality only up to 320kbps for its music streams comes top of our poll.

Specifically designed to complement Arcam’s Solo Music and Movie systems (HFC 414), the Solo Muso loudspeaker is rated at 80W (4ohm) and comes in a robust cast aluminium chassis. The main 125mm driver is constructed from a proprietary paper pulp fibre sandwich cone for its stiff but light properties. It is supported by a die-cast basket to minimise sound reflecting back towards the speaker cone and causing distortion in the process. The accompanying 25mm tweeter is of the neodymium aluminium dome variety and damped to similarly reduce distortion and improve the clarity of fine details.

When it first debuted, Arcam's irDAC proved to be a mighty impresive digital-to-anlaogue converter, winning a Group Test back in HFC 379. And now Arcam has unveilled the follow up to the succesful DAC in the shape of irDAC-II. The asyncronous USB DAC can also be utilised as a digital preamp, headphone amplifier and Bluetooth streamer. At its heart sits the ESS Sabre ES9016K2M DAC chip, while the headphone amplifier stage is taken from Arcam's flagship A49 amplifier.
